jan 4, 1917 - Virgin Island purchased from Denmark
Description:
The U.S. bought the virgin island from Denmark because U.S. officials thought the islands could help secure American economic interests in the Caribbean. Denmark owned the virgin island for a little over 250 years. The virgin island is not a state because Denmark handed over the control of the island via the Treaty of the Danish West Indies. No new states gained.
