Description:
In the 1899, a Chinese secret organization called the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists led an uprising in northern China against the spread of Western and Japanese influence there. The Boxer Rebellion formed in response to both foreign and domestic internal tensions. Western powers like the US and the nations of Europe had come to wield significant commercial, political, and religious influence across China. By the 1890s, many Chinese had come to resent the spread of Christian missionaries and their influence.
