Description:
The Federation of Australia was when the 6 separate British colonies decided to come together and form the commonwealth of Australia.
There were 4 reasons why the 6 British colonies decided to come together. First of all, was because of free trade. Because the colonies weren't together as a nation, it made it harder to transport goods around the country, because it would be priced higher.
Another reason was because of defence. One colony itself wouldn't be enough people to fight the enemy. If they came together, they could fight as a nation, being more powerful.
The third reason why was because of Immigration. They needed to get more people into Australia, so they came together to hhelp boost immigration.
The last reason was because of national pride. More people started identifying as Australian, rather than British, and many sporting teams started, representing Australia.
