Johnny Depp is fighting against the idea he owes his ex-lawyers money after they parted ways because he claims there was never an official written contract between the two.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Depp claims that deal he had with Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman — which was in place since 1999 — was only an oral agreement.
He describes the deal as “illegal” and says he lived up to his end of their “alleged oral agreement” and therefore he owes them nothing.
Depp and Bloom Hergot have been going back and forth in court for months. Depp sued them for $30 million, accusing them of conspiring with his former business managers to screw him out of millions. He blamed his lawyers for failing to alert him to his manager’s actions.
Bloom Hergot counter-sued, claiming they were owed an undisclosed sum in legal fees.
In his latest filing, Depp wants the court to dismiss their counter-suit and allow him to move forward with his $30 million case against the firm.
The cases remain ongoing.
