apr 16, 2011 - China’s Three Gorges Dam is fully operational
Description:
Cost almost $30 billion and could generate a capacity of over 22 gigawatts of electricity. The design of large turbines made a significant move toward the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It removed 100 million tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and 2 million tonnes of SO2 (sulfer dioxide) that would otherwise have been generated by coal-fired power stations. On the down side the dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced 1.4 million people, and increased the risk of landslides heavily. Sun Yat-sen visualized this idea more than 80 years ago.
