jun 22, 1774 - Quebec Act
Description:
DESCRIPTION:
Britain had acquired the territory of Quebec from France under the 1763 Treaty of Paris. The Quebec Act established the procedures of governance for the Province of Quebec. It defined the structure of the provincial government by creating a governor who was supported by a legislative council.
The Act specified that French-Catholic Canadians could participate in colonial government without abandoning their faith. It reinstated French civil law in combination with British criminal law.
COLONISTS:
The colonists regarded the Quebec Act was one of the Intolerable Acts, exhibiting the British Empire's intention to deny the colonists their inalienable rights. These rights - including the Quebec Act - helped push them toward revolution.
