mar 22, 1765 - Stamp Act
Description:
The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament in March 1765. This act required that any documents printed on paper that had been stamped to show that the duty had been paid (including but not limited to: newspapers, pamphlets, diplomas, legal documents, etc). This was an example of Britain exercising direct influence over colonial rule.
This act was put in place to help pay for British troops stationed in the colonies during the Seven Years' War.
The colonists greatly opposed this Act, especially since they had no representation in the British Parliament. They believed that the British taxing them without offering representation was denying their rights as English subjects.
