Description:

While the Autonomous Self-Improving corporate mining drones of the previous few decades were indeed quite efficient, they could not endure without external maintenance forever, and would breakdown within a decade or two of operation.

As such, to ensure profitability, manned maintenance ships were launched this year for the asteroid belt to keep and maintain the mining machines there.

With these ships able to harvest resources themselves to use in repair and maintenance operations, the drones could remain in the asteroid belt for over 5 decades without replacement. Although human crews had to be rotated every year or so, human hands were still deemed necessary to keep the resource income flowing.
