apr 1, 1985 - Crisis on Infinite Earths
Description:
The Multiverse exists in its infinite state, until a scientist known only as Pariah accidentally sets in motion that would allow for the Mobius, the Anti-Monitor, to begin his destruction of every universe in the DC Multiverse made up of positive matter. Standing against the Anti-Monitor is his brother Mar Novu, the Over-Monitor, who seeks out the remaining heroes in the Multiverse in an attempt to rally them against his brother, but is ultimately killed before the conflict begins. The Anti-Monitor's assault on the Multiverse results in all but five universes being completely erased. During the conflict between the Anti-Monitor's antimatter army and the Over-Monitor's team of heroes from the five surviving worlds, the remaining worlds are merged into one Earth, and the collapse of the positive matter universe is prevented, with the Anti-Monitor as well as hundreds of superheroes dying in the ensuing conflict. Earth-1 becomes the main and only universe in what once was the Multiverse, although it inherits certain aspects of the history of Earth-2, such as the Justice Society of America's existence during World War 2, 20 years before the formation of the Justice League of America. Characters from the erased and/or merged worlds suffer a variety of fates depending on their relation to the new Earth: Helena Wayne, the Huntress of Earth-2, is simply erased due to the fact that she could not logically exist in the new timeline due to the current age of Bruce Wayne in it, and she is instead replaced with Helena Bertinelli, a new Huntress; Power Girl of Earth-2 is allowed to integrate into the new Earth, as the Supergirl of Earth-1 was killed during the Crisis, thus allowing her to take her place as the sole Earth's Kara Zor-El; Alexander Luthor of Earth-3, Kal-L and Lois Lane of Earth-2, and Superboy of Earth-Prime are all forced to live in a pocket dimension outside of space and time, since they are variants of characters who currently already exist in the DC timeline, and thus cannot exist directly in the same universe for too long, lest they cause a paradox.
