nov 1, 1788 - illness of George III leads to the regency crisis

Description:

Whig, Charles Fox was friends with the Prince of Wales and was eager for him to be declared regent immediately as he hoped he would dismiss Pitt. However, Pitt argued that the decision should be made by parliament. Thus Fox, the great supporter of the constitution and the rights of the people and parliament, seemed to be arguing for the power of the monarchy, while Pitt, who owed so much of his power to the King, was appearing to be the supporter of parliament and a crown that took its power from parliament.
