The Sauvage campaign was a huge success all over the world. How did you like working on the set?

It was an interesting experience and I had the most pleasant impressions. Although, of course, it’s a little strange, driving through the city, seeing billboards with your image - a little like a hallucination.

Is there anything from the real Johnny Depp in the image created by Jean-Baptiste Mondino for Dior Sauvage?

When Jean-Baptiste looks at you, it is as if he is dissecting with his gaze: he removes layer by layer until he finds something interesting. This way he manages to capture something very important in a person. For example, a wolf - it’s not by chance that he appears there. The wolf is a loner by nature, and some part of me really strives for loneliness.

I always try to avoid large crowds of people.
So are you a loner too? I just like to stay in the shadows. I'm a shy person, and Jean-Baptiste understood this. I feel much more comfortable transforming into a character than when I'm just me in real life. If I have to stand up and make a toast at a dinner party, it's a disaster, but once the director gives the command "Motor!", the whole world lies at my feet. I can do anything in front of the camera.

Who else would you like to play? Are there historical or modern heroes who inspire you?

There are people who fascinate me, and there are books that I just go crazy about. For example, "The Catcher in the Rye." But no one should ever see Holden Caulfield on screen. Let him live in the imagination of readers and remain the way Salinger portrayed him. There are simply great people. For example, Picasso.
It’s impossible to show such a grandiose personality in a movie; it’s better not to even try it. Or Kerouac's On the Road. This book was my bible as a child and still means a lot to me now. But it never occurred to me that a movie could be made from it. The film that they filmed it, I didn’t watch it, although I know the director Walter Salles - he’s a wonderful guy. But the main character Sal Paradise is Jack Kerouac ! It is impossible to imagine anyone else in this place. In other words, there are such wonderful people and books that it is better not to touch.

How do you choose the films you will star in?
I can evaluate a script after reading the first ten pages.

In fact, now three or four are enough for me to understand whether I am suitable for the role. I choose films where I can bring something new and original in terms of acting and character interpretation. If something touches me or the plot captures me, visual images pop up in my head. And in nine cases out of ten, it is the first ideas that turn out to be correct. Kerouac said:
"The first thought is the best." Hemingway thought so too.

When asked how to become a great writer, he answered: “Write one sentence of truth.” It sounds simple - but go ahead and try it.
Have you ever written anything for your own characters?

I've been rewriting my words for years now. Sometimes the script is very beautiful on paper, but on set it becomes clear that a lot of things don't work because people don't talk like that. Therefore, I often rewrite some parts, and for the role of Jack Sparrow I generally write everything myself. Besides, I stopped reading stage directions in scripts a long time ago. I don’t want to know in advance where I should stand and what I should do in the frame - everything should be born on its own on set.

You are often called cool. What does this word mean to you?

It always seemed to me that the coolest thing is to remain yourself. Patti Smith is cool because she's honest and real. Iggy Pop is cool and real, so were Jim Morrison, Marlon Brando and Hunter S. Thompson. And today one person told me that he works as a volunteer with children with HIV. This is where real courage lies. His story touched me so much that we hugged. I worked a lot with Make-A-Wish, a charity that helps grant wishes to terminally ill children. They are in a terrible situation, they are in real pain. But there is no fear in their eyes - only courage, courage... This is really cool.
