本片是张彻与第四代张家班在台湾的“长弓”影业公司拍摄，傅声主演，由邵氏发行，是张彻在台湾的代表作，也是他走向“功夫片”这一新的武侠动作片的标志，此前与此后，张彻都拍摄了一系列少林寺和南拳人物（以方世玉为代表）的电影。
