1967年1月，香港《文汇报》全文转载姚文元批判《清宫秘史》，直接引发了朱石麟脑溢血去世。一次悲剧为起点，香港左派电影被激进势力主导。1967年，香港爆发反英暴动，多位参与暴动的左派电影人被捕和驱逐，左翼电影走向衰亡。
