本片是香港影片公司第一部电影，取材于中国古典文学名著《三国演义》，内容描述一个名叫左慈（黎北海）的术士，运用各种法术戏弄奸雄曹操。女主角许梦痕，是香港影片公司演员训练班训练出来的高材生。摄影师彭年留美多年。内景在香港利园山搭拍，外景在柴湾拍摄，从现存剧照来看，是一部制作精良、场面浩大的古装巨片。
