Description:
The Fugitive Slave Law allowed local governments to capture African-Americans that they believed were runaway slaves, and return them to their owners. However, many slaves who were not slaves were forced into slavery due to this law. In addition to re-enslavement, this law allowed harsh punishment to those who aided runaway slaves in their escape.Cause: Compromise of 1850 and pressure of politicians.
Effect: Compelled white Americans to capture runaway slaves. Influenced many to express their opinions on it.
