“The colony of Victoria has officially separated from New South Wales after a decade of rapid population growth and economic development. The new colony was named after Queen Victoria, who granted the royal assent for the separation on 1 July 1851. The border between Victoria and New South Wales was mostly along the Murray River, with a short line from the river to Cape Howe.
