“A new colony has been established in the southern part of New South Wales. The colony of South Australia was proclaimed on 28 December 1836 by Captain John Hindmarsh, the first governor, at Glenelg near the present site of Adelaide. The settlers, who arrived on nine ships from Britain, were mostly farmers, artisans, and merchants who hoped to establish a self-sufficient economy without relying on convict labour."
