jan 1, 2014 - Rubens valente publishes his book
Description:
In 2014 an investigative Journalist named Rubens Valente published a book called Banker Operation (Operação Banqueiro), telling the story of a 2008 police operation that involved the imprisonment and immediate release of one of the most powerful bankers in Brazil. Valente exposed the role of Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Gilmar Mendes (who was at the time president of the STF) in ensuring banker Daniel Dantas evaded prison. Shortly after the book was published, Mendes sued Valente for defamation, and exploited his connections to punish him. Valente was sentenced to pay compensation, in addition to paying Mendes 60,000$, and being named joint debtor for the company that went bankrupt after publishing his book, so he had to pay too.
Valente’s case exemplifies how a corrupt judiciary protects wrongdoers and perpetuates human rights violations.
