jan 1, 1816 - Samuel Taylor Coleridge I Kubla Khan
Description:
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was an English poet, literary critic, philosopher and theologian. He was the co-founder of the Romantic Movement in England. His critical work was highly influential, and he coined many familiar words and phrases.
The poem tells us about the kingdom of Kubla Khan, and a mythical place called Xanadu. Kubla Khan is a powerful ruler who has great command. His authoritativeness lies in the fact that he can order for a pleasure dome of ice caves to be built on merely one order. It is miraculous because it’s in a sunny area, and doesn’t melt. The poem beautifully illustrates the landscape. Kubla Khan hears the voice of his ancestors foretelling a war. The last stanza is about a dream the poet had about a black damsel playing a musical instrument and singing for Mount Abora. The poet wishes he could have the same symphony as the girl, so the audience will praise him. Samuel said he wrote the strange and hallucinatory poem shortly after waking up from an opium-influenced dream.
There are two main theories about Kubla Khan. One theory says that "Kubla Khan" is about poetry and the two sections discuss two types of poems.
Another one, claims the main theme is the contrast between nature's power and mankind's power.
