jan 1, 1991 - A Brief History of Toa Payoh | Koh Buck Song

Description:

Koh Buck Song (born 1963) is a Singeporean writer and poet. He has held several exhibitions as a Singaporean pioneer of haiga art, developed from a 16th-century Japanese art form combining ink sketches with haiku poems.

It captures reflection on the fast pace of Singapore’s urban development, stirred by memories of the old Toa Payoh estate and its significant places and landmark events, before its rejuvenation later in the 1990s. Toa Payoh is a mature residential town and an urban planning area in the central region of Singapore. The poem discusses how the ruining of the old town in order to modernize it is wrong, and it is like ruining history - growth has always been a process that was too quick.
