jan 1, 1998 - Death of Marat | Gavin Turk
Description:
Gavin Turk (born 1967) is a British artist, who is famous for exploring authenticity, identity and modernist and avant-garde subjects, and considered to be one of the Young British artists - a group of visual artists.
Death of Marat was made in 1998, and is a waxwork of the artist as Marat, with the same composition of Jacques-Louis David’s painting, mirrored (though the paper is missing). This is ironic, since Madame Tussaud, who popularised wax work, began her career as an art instructor to the French Royal family who was guillotined in the French Revolution, and won the revolutionaries’ favour by modelling wax replicas of the royal severed heads.
