jan 1, 1793 - The Death of Marat | Jacques Louis David
Description:
Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style. David had many pupils, making him the strongest influence in French art of the early 19th century, especially academic Salon painting. He was also a Montagnard and a friend of Marat.
The Death of Marat was made in 1793, the same year of the subject’s death. In the painting Marat is depicted lying in his bathtub still, one arm spilling over the edge holding a quill, the other holding Corday’s letter of introduction. Above his chest is a bleeding stab wound, and on the floor is the responsible bloody knife. Art historian T. J. Clark called Jackues's painting the first modernist work for "the way it took the stuff of politics as its material, and did not transmute it".
