Braveheart is a 1995 American historical drama film directed and produced by, and starring Mel Gibson. It follows Sir William Wallace, a late 13th century Scottish warrior who led the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. After his wife was executed (for not wanting to be raped by english soldiers)and his father killed at the begining, he starts a rebellion, fights the king, gets the prince’s wife pregnant and therefore guarantees his descendant will rule after the old king, gets tortured and hanged, and even in his last moments hopes for freedom. It is also considered one of the most historically inaccurate films ever. The entire look of Wallace and the Scots is completely wrong, since during this period, Scots didn’t wear skirts, and when they did, it wasn’t in the bizarre style of the film. That is one of the smaller mistakes in the film - the real mistakes lie in the events depicted, that were widely different in real life - Wallace being captured after waging war against the English by Edinburgh in the film with the betrayal of his men, then brought to London before an English magistrate and sentenced to death. In the actual events, Wallace was caught in Glasgow after several years exiled in France, and was betrayed by a Scottish knight who gave him to English Soldiers. The entire scene after Wallace’s death where Robert the Bruce, the King of Scotland, leads them into a bloody battle after invoking them to stand by him like they did with Wallace is a completely made up story. The battle was called Battle of Bannockburn as a spontaneous uprising against the English, when in reality, Robert the Bruce was at war with English for 8 years. Even the nickname Braveheart was used for the Scottish king. When the film ends with a hopeful note, the First War of independence continued for another 14 years, and there was another one. There are a dozen more inaccuracies, and the story is only loosely based on history, if we can even call it that. The story is inspired by Blind Harry’s 15 century epic poem The Acts and Deidis of the Illustre and Vallyeant Campioun Schir William Wallace. Mel Gibson acknowledged in the DVD audio commentary, saying that he chose to not be historically accurate in favour of having a more"cinematically compelling" film.
