jan 1, 1838 - Invention of the daguerreotype
Description:
Louis Daguerre (also French) created the first publicly available photographic process, called Daguerreotype. The process involved the use of polished, light sensitive silver-plated copper which was exposed in a camera. The plate would then undergo mercury fuming and chemical treatment before being rinsed, dried, and then sealed behind protective glass. Due to its short exposure time (compared to Nicéphore’s), the Daguerreotype could photograph people. However, the process was complicated, so it was mostly reserved for professionals.
