may 3, 1898 - Dewey vs Spanish at Manila Bay

Description:

Dewey commanded the American fleet of 6 warships that sailed into fame May 1, 1898 in Manila Bay, Philippines. His attack quickly destroyed an inferior Spanish fleet of 10 outdated ships, killing or wounding 400 Spaniards with no American casualties. Emiliano Aguinaldo was in Dewey's party as a Filipino revolutionary exile. Aguinaldo was instrumental in rousing Filipino nationalism and rebellion against the U.S. occupation after the war. U.S. military reinforcements arrived in Manila Bay in August, 1898 to complete the attack on Spain's far east possession. In the final treaty with Spain (Treaty of Paris), the U.S. agreed to pay $20 million to Spain for the Philippines.
