feb 15, 1893 - Queen Liliuokalani overthrown

Description:

The U. S. annexation of Hawaii is the brainchild of wealthy, white American sugar planters in Hawaii who could think of no other way to circumvent the negative impact of the McKinley Tariff on their sugar exports than to have Hawaii quickly join the Union. In 1893, U.S. troops helped this gang grab control of Hawaii. Hawaii's Queen Liliuokalani is in league with Thomas Jefferson and Sam Adam's for her refusal to quietly accept the colonial power that wished to oppress her people. The difference is perhaps that she could not organize significant military forces and she was of Hawaiian descent not European. In 1898, Congress declared Hawaii a U.S. Territory, it became the 50th State in 1959.
