jun 17, 1919 - Race riots

Description:

Over 6000 labor strikes took place during the war years, many of which were bloody. Recognition of the right to organize was denied. In East St. Louis, Missouri during July of 1917, a race riot broke out, killing nine whites and 40 blacks. In Chicago, the migration of blacks, their presence in previously white neighborhoods and as Strikebreakers for meatpacking factories led to conflict in July 1919. The violence erupted at Lake Michigan beach and resulted in a two-week riot leaving 15 whites and 23 blacks dead.
