may 21, 1917 - Selective Service Act

Description:

The Draft Act was passed in Congress in May 1917 as a temporary conscription. With it in place, the US Army grew to four million within two months. However, it took a year from the time of the U.S. Declaration of War before any significant US fighting force arrived in France. The Doughboys were the American troops whose timely arrival helped stop the German Drive. With a counter-offensive, U.S. and Allied forces changed the momentum of the Great War.
