nov 2, 1906 - Pure Food and Drug Act

Description:

Important legislation was passed for consumers in 1906, not coincidentally, the same year as the publication of Sinclair's The Jungle. Many meat products being marketed in the U.S. at the time came from deplorable conditions in slaughterhouses and factories. The Meat Inspection bill mandated federal inspection, by new federal inspectors, of meat shipped over state lines. The Pure Food and Drug bill helped attacked mislabeling of food and pharmaceuticals. Both pieces of legislation set significant precedent for later government reforms.
