Description:
British authorities inform Wilson of secret telegram between German foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, and German minister in Mexico. In the telegram Zimmerman promises to return the “lost provinces” of Mexico, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, if Mexico declares war against United States. Wilson responds by asking Congress to approve “armed neutrality” to allow merchant ships to fight back against attackers. In March 1917, German U-boats sink five American vessels off Britian, bring the U.S. into WWI.Added to timeline:
