exactly a year and ten days after their first meeting, anneliese becomes pregnant
which is bad news for them and smth everyone should've seen coming when they let two hormonal teenagers in love live with each other
bc they haven't actually been married yet
they're still a month or so away from the wedding bc they needed to teach anneliese how to be a duchess before they could actually, yknow, let her become a duchess
and it isn't soon after she finds out she's pregnant that robb atkins sr goes to caveria to help quell an uprising from future darian rebels and is thusly killed by said uprising
meaning robb now has to become duke and they should, by all means, delay the wedding so he can get into his role properly
only, anneliese is preggo, and though abortion is available, it's still incredibly dangerous and frowned upon and they also really want this child bc, yknow, it's their duty and they're in love and think they're a lot more mature than they really are
so instead of delaying, they have the wedding the day after they received the missive about sr's death
go figure, it's not the best image to bestow and the people don't take too kindly to it and the wedding they were supposed to celebrate turns into a conspiracy event and one where, instead of cheering for the newly weds, the people threw rocks and rotten fruit at the carriage
this was anneliese's first real confrontation with reality vs expectation
whereas she thought the life as a duchess would be glamorous with endless parties and the occasional act of goodwill, really it's being pumelled with rotten tomatoes by people who think it's weird you got married the day after you found out your father-in-law is dead
and when it's announced she'd pregnant, rumour quickly spirals that the real father of her child is, in fact, her older brother george (and no, i did not realise until just now that i made an incestous rumour based around two siblings called ANNEliese and george, happy coincidence (or not so happy, but yknow))
needless to say, this does nothing for her fraying mental health, and it only deteriorates during the months of her pregnancy, smth robb and everyone else, including herself, chalk up to hormones
