aug 27, 1973 - August 27 1973 TRIAL BEGINS

Description:

Stan Pitkin, US Attorney for Western Washington, officially filed a complaint to solve the fishing rights problem. Many tribes joined, as well as other state agencies. Attorney General Slade Gorton represented the state, he argued that the native people don't have the right to fish off their reservation and that he focused on the state regulations rather than the things stated in the treaties. Also, the state said the laws were not discriminatory although the tribes are only able to catch some amounts of fish.
