Weber publishes
on the "Sensation
of Touch"
---------------------------
Weber's Law and
"just noticeable
differences (JNDs)"
Description:
Weber's Law: K = JND/S
Importance:
(a) Subjects mental events (sensations) to measurement and mathematical formulation. (eventually leads to importance of psychophysics in Wundt's 'new psychology')
(b) Shows that there is not a one-to-one relationship between changes in the physical world and psychological experience of those changes. Understanding how the mind organizes its experiences requires knowing more than just the physical dimensions of a stimuli; also requires an attempt to determine how the mind interprets said stimuli.
(c) Shows that mental and physical events could be related mathematically.
