mar 2, 1917 - Nicholas II abdicated

Description:

Representatives of the Duma met up with the Tsar prior to this to request his abdication. He agreed to do this on the 2nd of March, and abdicated for both him and his son as he believed his son was too ill to be the Tsar of Russia.

Nicholas recognised that he had lost the support of the Russian elite:
- In 1905 he was able to reassert control of Russia because he had the support of the army. However in 1917 senior generals indicated that they were not willing to support him
- In 1905 Nicholas was able to reach a compromise with the middle class. However, in 1917 the middle class had lost faith in the Tsar, due to rumours of corruption and the incompetence of his wartime government
