John Brown was a vehement abolitionist. Along with 21 followers, 5 of which were freed black people, Brown attacked the Harper's Ferry. Brown wanted to ignite a slave rebellion throughout the South. This would lead to the establishment of an African-American state in the South. Brown was captured and hung.
Effect: Instantly, Brown became a martyr for the abolitionist cause and an anti-slavery icon. His raid accelerated the coming of the Civil War. The cartoon allowed people to see the severity of the raid, the men who fought, and the fear of the black men and women.
