may 27, 1896 - Khodynka Tragedy

Description:

- People were celebrating the King's coronation in Khodynka, because it was the only other place in Russia that would fit all of the people from Moscow
- Khodynka was a military training ground and had very uneven ground thanks to trenches
- There were rumours that because there were so many people, not everyone would get food as they were giving out bread and free beer at the event
- Subsequently, they all tried to rush and get food. Of 100,000 that were there, around 1,389 were trampled to death and roughly 1,300 were injured
- Nicholas wanted to mourn the citizens but the French ambassador's gala was that night and he was told he had to go to preserve relations between Russia and France so he went
- People thought he was uncaring and evil from there on, and the Khodynka was seen as a bad omen for the rest of Nicholas' reign.
