feb 24, 1969 - NI general election 1969

Description:

O'Neill set up a Commission to report the violence in NI after the PD march through Derry. This Commission was met with back lash with people criticising O'Neill for being too weak. Brian Faulkner( Minister for Commerce) and William Morgan (Minister for Health) both resigned from cabinet after the announcement of the Commission. In late January, 12 MPs met and demanded O'Neill resign as party leader and PM. O'Neill responded by calling an election. O'Neill won but not by much. Additionally, not all MPs that elected the Unionist Party supported O'Neill's policies. O'Neill did not get the amount of Catholic voters that he had hoped for. Despite this, O'Neill would go on as PM for another 2 months before resigning on 24th February 1969.
