sep 1, 1960 - Hurricane Ethel

Description:

Hurricane Ethel was the deadliest hurricane of the 1960 Atlantic Hurricane Season. It was also the most destructive and strongest hurricane, which contributed to its deadliness. It was a Category 5 on the scale. It caused winds of over 175 miles per hour. Ethel sunk many boats and killed 18 people. It cost more than 1.5 million USD (60s money). It affected mainly Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and some other southern US states. Ethel started out as a tropical storm from a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico but quickly became a hurricane in only six hours. Not only did it become intense fast, but it also died out fast. Only two days after it started, it stopped. This was very fortunate, if it stayed in full force for longer, tons of Louisiana would have been destroyed. There was no flooding in Florida, but a power out occurred in most of Tallahassee when a lightning strike hit a power station.
