In April of 1942, Japan prepared to attack Port Moresby, New Guinea, an important supply point for the Allied forces. Both sides knew that if taken Australia would be cut off from the Allies and be left defenseless for Japan to take. On May 7, 1942, after several days of looking for each other Allied and Japanese fleets meet and begin to attack a place called the Coral Sea (which is why it is called The Battle of the Coral Sea). The Battle of the Coral Sea is the first naval battle in which ships of the opposing sides never see each other. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a battle where each side was just throwing fighters and bombers at each other just waiting for one of the Carriers to go down. The U.S. were the first to make a big move sinking a Japanese Carrier named Shoho. On May 8 the U.S. damaged another Japanese Carrier in return for severe damages to two U.S. carriers. In the end, the Japanese forces pull out, postponing the invasion of New Guinea and resulting in an Allied victory.
