sep 1, 1964 - The First Supercomputer, CDC 6600, Is Made
Description:
Generally, computers used CPU's, which is a Central Processing Unit, but with the release of the CDC 6600, it used a CP, which is a Simplified Central Processor. This helped the computer run a lot faster. It was one of the fastest supercomputers of its time. It was used for scientific research. It was created by Seymour Clay. It had a memory of up to 982 kilobytes. The price of the computer at the time was $2,370,000, or as of 2022, it would be equivalent to $22,360,000. It weighed 12,000 pounds, or about 5.4 tons. It was about 79 inches tall, each cabinet's width was 32 inches, and each cabinet's length was 67 inches. There were four cabinets. The design was very innovative, because the screens and keyboard replaced hundreds of blinking lights and switches. The computer was very helpful for America's pursuit for scientific knowledge.
