aug 13, 1961 - The Berlin Wall is Built

Description:

The construction of the Berlin Wall was a very significant event in the Cold War. The wall was built by the German Democratic Republic to prevent East Berlin citizens from fleeing to West Berlin. East Berliners would flee to the West because of a better lifestyle and more freedom. The Wall ran for about 96 miles. The Wall was fortified with barbed wire, guard towers, anti-vehicle trenches, minefields, and more. After the Berlin Wall was built, it stood for nearly 30 years, and its demolition in 1989 marked the end of the Cold War. It was torn down by the citizens of East Berlin after the government announced the citizens would be able to travel across the border. The Berlin Wall is a key reminder of the dangers of totalitarianism and the importance of our freedom, democracy, and human rights. It also is a symbol to remind us of the very dangerous threats of communism.
