Europorte, the rail freight subsidiary of the Getlink Group, is teaming up with Socofer, the historic French manufacturer of rail equipment, to develop a project to hybridize the engines of thermal locomotives.

After the successful introduction of biofuels in its operations, Europorte is pursuing its strategy of decarbonizing its fleet of thermal rolling stock. By combining their expertise in an innovative approach, Europorte and Socofer aim to develop a unique solution for the hybridization of diesel traction equipment with a view to compatibility with the national rail network.

Socofer will contribute its skills in the design, construction and modification of rail traction units, while Europorte will share its expertise in the operation of fleets dedicated to rail freight transport. After a technical study phase, a prototype will be developed and then operated under real conditions before being scaled up to a fleet of 15 heat-powered locomotives.
