jun 17, 1775 - Battle of Bunker Hill

Description:

The Battle of Bunker Hill will go down in history as a symbol of the American Revolution. The patriot militia was closing in on Boston, and they decided to fortify Breed’s Hill. General William Howe and Brigadier General Robert Pigot marched to Breed’s Hill to attack the patriots of the American Revolution and stop the rebellion once and for all. While the British Army charged up the hill towards the encampment, Willam Prescott, in an attempt to save the little ammunition and supplies they had, said the famous line, “Don’t fire till you see the whites of their eyes!”. Listening to Willam Prescott, the patriots didn’t fire a shot until the redcoats were only a couple yards away, then opened up with a deadly barrage into the british lines, this forced the British army into a retreat. They reorganized themselves and attacked the redoubts again, with the same result. The militia was running low on ammunition at this point, and when the British attacked for the third time, the patriots couldn’t hold them back, and the redcoats overran the fortifications, forcing the colonists to retreat. This was a victory for the British, but this battle showed that the Americans were determined to fight for the long run.
