may 10, 1775 - Fort Ticonderoga Falls to the Green Mountain Boys

Description:

The capture of Fort Ticonderoga by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys was a feat of military ingenuity. Even though the odds were against them, they still took the valuable fort for the patriots. The fort, even though it wasn’t in great shape itself, was known for its advantageous position on the confluence of Lake George and Lake Champlain, and for the weapons and ammunition it housed. The Green Mountain Boys were not alone, however, Benedict Arnold and a commission from Massachusetts attacked Fort Ticonderoga with them. 83 soldiers cross the lake for many hours before arriving at the fort, and Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold decide to attack then, because they were worried about losing the element of surprise. The guards are quickly taken care of and patriots charged up to the officer’s quarters, and when asked by the British commander why they were attacking, Ethan Allen said “In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress.” and he demands that the British surrender the fort.
