-Castro was close with Russia, which made US nervous

-Plan was to have CIA train Cuban exiles and start a revolution, hoping natives would join in, but they didn't

-Three main factors for the failure of this mission would be: no element of surprise, no military support, and the Cubans did not join the revolt

-also had a remote landing space, making it harder to invade
