Description:
Caused by a 100-person protest march against injustice and widespread poverty, some armed with sticks and stones. Courthouse and nearby buildings burnt after 7 shot by volunteer militia. 25 people died. Led by Paul Bogle.
Jamaican Governor Eyre declared martial law - many innocent black people killed (initial death toll more than 400). More than 300 arrested; many executed with a quick trial, incl. Paul Bogle.
1865 Jamaica Commission called Eyre a mass murderer.
