apr 15, 1923 - First Sound-On-Film Played
Description:
A sound film is a motion picture with sound that is synchronized with it, opposed to silent film. The first commercial screening of short motion pictures using this technology took place on April 15th, 1923. This happened at the New York City’s Rivoli Theater, and consisted a set of a few short films that contained some of the most popular stars of the 1920s, such as Eddie Cantor, Harry Richman, Sophie Tucker, and George Jessel and a few others, doing all kinds of perfomanes on stage. Some of these performances were vaudevilles (a comedy act that had no moral meaning), musical acts (such as singing and dancing to music) and speeches. A copy of the tape was found in 2010 and is now stored in the US Liberty of Congress. As for the Rivoli Theater, it closed in June of 1987 and was demolished shortly after. It was built in 1917 and seats for a movie were always one dollar.
