sep 19, 1898 - Fashoda Crisis 1898
Description:
French expedition led by General Marchand arrived in Fashoda on 10 July 1898 to gain control of the Upper Nile. Standoff between British and French forces occurred at Fashoda on 19 Sept 1898 when Kitchener confronted Marchand telling him he and his men had to leave the Sudan at once. Marchand refused, but French were outnumbered by 10 to 1 so no fighting occurred. French eventually withdrew and Anglo-French Convention signed in 1899 confirming British control of the Nile (vital to security of Egypt).
