apr 29, 1785 - Northwest Indian War
Description:
This war was between the Northwest Indian Confederacy and the United States. This war was started when the British handed over the Ohio Country and Illinois Country through the Treaty of Paris. The Huron tribe led a confederacy of Native Ameicans tribes to resist the settlement of Native American lands. President Washington appointed General Anthony Wayne, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, to organize a military force, the Legion of the United States. Even though the United States had the military advantage, the Native Americans had several impressive wins. Some of these wins include the Harmar Campaign and St. Clair’s Defeat. St. Clair’s Defeat might have been the greatest defeat in American military history. The major Native American tribes that participated in the Northwest Indian War were the Miami, the Shawnee, the Delaware, the Huron, the Iroquois, the Odawa, the Potowatomi, and the Ojibwe. After the final battle, the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the tribes were forced to give the territory to United States under the Treaty of Greenville.
