jan 1, 1896 - Plessy vs Ferguson
Description:
The landmark Plessy vs. Ferguson case upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation in public facilities
It created a state of legalised discrimination that continued for close to 60 years, putting in place the controversial separate but equal principle
Its central idea was that separate facilities were legally permitted provided they were of equal quality (they most certainly weren’t!)
Plessy v. Fergusson legitimised the swathe of segregation laws passed in the South after Reconstruction
